Here are my thoughts on teaching piano:
I believe the healthiest curriculum for young pianists includes
- technical skills
- sight reading
- music theory study
- etudes
- repertoire (from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern Eras)
- improvisation
- composition
Here are my thoughts on teaching piano:
- I want each of my students to love music, and love the piano. I wish to do nothing to inhibit this long-term love.
- At its essence, the study of music is the study of tension and resolution.
- Excellent technique is essential for superior sound production.
- It is not enough to learn the notes, rhythms, fingering, articulations, and dynamics. Music-making occurs when all of these parts taken together and expressivity occurs.
